Watford Ladies FC (WLFC) U14 Hornets reached the final of the Hertfordshire County Cup after beating their sister team, the Warriors.
In what would have been the dream final for WLFC, the Hornets ran out 4-1 winners in a nervy but entertaining game which saw great friends pitted against each other. The biggest crowd of the season, which included visiting FA officials, were treated to end-to-end action in the winter sun at Parmiter’s School.
The Hornets struck first when Eva Delaney delivered a cross for Sophia McNamara to tap home
from close range. They doubled their lead when captain Amy Moynihan delivered an exquisite pass to Chloe Shelley, who beat the defender to drill the ball home. Jada Hemmings-Deane made it 3-0, hitting the back of the net to give the Hornets a strong platform at half-time.
The Warriors showed their class in the second half with intricate possession football and a solid
defence. Their reward came when Maddie Thurlow got on the end of a long pass and beat three defenders to rifle home a half volley from 30 yards to make it 3-1. Despite the Warriors’ strong showing in the second half, the Hornets sealed victory when Jada Hemmings-Deane curled the ball into the top corner to book their place in the final on March 26 against St Albans.
