WLFC U14 Hornets produced a stunning performance against St Albans City North last Saturday to win the County Cup Final at the Hertfordshire FA County Ground in Letchworth.
The atmosphere was electric as the players walked out of the tunnel into the sun to be greeted by their excitable supporters. On a hot day it took time for both teams to settle until Eva Delaney opened the scoring with a low shot past the St Albans’ keeper, to the delight of the Watford fans. Despite the heat, there was no lack of intensity as St Albans, encouraged by their supporters, looked for an equalizer. However, just before half time captain Amy Moynihan fired home from long range to settle Watford’s nerves.
The second half saw Watford playing with confidence and fluency, with Ellyce Breaks orchestrating more of the ball in midfield and Isabel Renner making some fine runs down the right. Eventually St Albans’ resistance was broken when Delaney made it 3-0, picking up the ball on the right-hand side and drilling it home into the far corner.
The move of the game led to the Hornets’ fourth, when Katy Allenby and Jamaica Ogilvie-Charlesworth combined with Breaks and Moynihan. Jada Hemmings Deane then laid off the ball to Chloe Shelley who fired a left foot strike into the roof of the net to complete the achievement of scoring in every round of the Cup.
Delaney became the hat-trick hero scoring a penalty to seal a 5-0 victory and win the County Cup for the Watford Hornets.
